The revealing series concludes with Ed Stafford heading to estates east of Glasgow to survey the crippling impact of the cost-of-living crisis on a community already beset by drug addiction. The two men offer frank, engaging accounts of the media scrutiny and mutual respect. This superb series arrives at one of the great sport rivalries, a clash of styles, temperaments and headbands as Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe squared off in two successive Wimbledon finals. The judging panel includes mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink and Aidan Lang, general director of Welsh National Opera. Dermot O’Leary and Alex Scott introduce the action where silliness nestles alongside sporting prowess.Īiring for the next five nights, this annual contest assembles 16 young performers and begins with singers from South Korea, Canada, England and South Africa, only one of whom will progress to Thursday’s final. The singer and long-time Songs of Praise presenter Katherine Jenkins travels to London’s Syon House, where she is moved to look back on the highlights of her time on the show, from visits to Caldey Island, Gas Street Church in Birmingham and the Tower of London to favourite hymns including Amazing Grace, Lord Thy Church on Earth is Seeking and Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven.Īlways a reliable source of hilarious incongruity – remember Diego Maradona taking a penalty against Jamie Theakston? – this year’s charity beanfeast sees Mo Farah, Jill Scott and Tom Hiddleston lead the English line against a World XI including Usain Bolt, Patrice Evra and, honouring his Irish roots, Lee Mack. But there is much to enjoy here, nonetheless. ![]() ![]() Her final years are more familiar and thus less intriguing, while the conclusion that she will remain “an enigma” feels limp. The 1950s and 1960s are intriguingly posited as a time when the tightrope walk of personal and professional responsibilities felt especially precarious, her many tours of duty creating the impression of an absent mother fly-on-the-wall series The Royal Family was a response effective enough to alarm the Queen into withdrawing the footage. Beginning with a childhood whose relative seclusion was made possible by the unlikelihood of her ever ascending the throne, it takes us through the war years, in which she was successfully repositioned as a princess of the people, through to the televised Coronation which appeared to present the perfect marriage of tradition and modernity. While it proves impossible to condense the extraordinary life and times of Queen Elizabeth II, Richard Shaw’s film assembles some experienced pundits and excellent footage to scrutinise the relationship between the late Queen and her public over her 96 years.

HBO Documentary Films has acquired all North American rights to the feature-length documentary The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart about the legendary band who wrote more than 1,000 songs, including twenty number one hits throughout their career. "Whoa!", I said, "Albhy Galuten on piano?" The fella goes, "Yeah, you've heard of him?" "Only the keyboard guy on the Bee Gees tunes!" I was pawing over it and I started reading the musician roster on the label of all the folks he'd hired to play on his session. He had booked a recording session down at Criterion and he came back with the master tape. There was a jock there who was also a musician. ![]() I used to hang occasionally with those dudes. I have had a deep, lifelong love for any recording that was built to come out of a radio speaker perfectly (see also: "Lightning Strikes", "Let's Hang On!" etc.).īack in the late '70s I worked at a station in West Palm Beach with a Country FM across the hall. The two most obvious examples of that were "Emotion" by Samantha Sang (wherever you are!) and my very own personal number one guilty Hot AC pleasure of all time, "Heartbreaker" by Dionne Warwick. Olympus of hit record production down there in Miami, they could produce other artists and still come out with an easily-identifiable "Bee Gees record". You know what I found fascinating about the Bee Gees? By the time they'd climbed the Mt. Well worth seeing, even if you still have no desire to ever hear “Stayin’ Alive” again. Was all the money, fame, women, gold records and legacy worth it? I thought the best moment of the film was when Barry Gibb answered that question. Of the four brothers (including Andy), only one is left. ![]() This was certainly mentioned but more in passing. To one degree or another they all fell prey to drug and alcohol addiction. That's the part of the story we all did know going in. Marshall chose to emphasize their career and not the steep price they paid for it. That's way more important than "should the group break up?" In the case of the Bee Gees, happily, blood was thicker than platinum. ![]() But when you add to that family dynamics, played against the many traps of success you test the very foundation of the family unit. ![]() Rock group dynamics are always complex - you have different personalities and backgrounds and ultimate career goals. (I’m only sorry it wasn’t a documentary for CNN because then they might’ve interviewed me.) There’s great archival footage and interviews with the Gibb brothers over the years so the story was mostly told in their own words. And I actually found myself engrossed in their story. I actually got a much better appreciation of their talent. THE BEE GEES: HOW DO YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART, directed by Frank Marshall, is one of the best rock documentaries I’ve ever seen. Their songs were played to death during the disco era and Barry Gibb’s falsetto always sounded like a cat being strangled.īut more and more people were raving about it so I decided to give it a whirl. Not that I disliked the Bee Gees, but I never got what the excitement was all about. I have to admit, when I saw there was a new documentary about the Bee Gees on HBO Max I yawned. It is essential that milk is textured correctly with silky micro foam. Cappuccinos are espresso based with a 30ml shot, then topped with silky thick textured milk. It is made by stopping the espresso extraction before the espresso starts to blonde. A ristretto is a restricted version of an espresso. In Italian ristretto means ‘restricted’, and it literally translates into your coffee cup. Espresso’s are commonly served in an 80-90ml ceramic cup. You can read more on Espresso Brew Ratios here. A ratio of 1:2 simply means, for every 1 gram of ground coffee, your espresso must weigh twice that. A 1:2 ratio is a great starting point for espresso. To sum up, you can describe the drinks as follows:Ī macchiato is an espresso with only a splash of milk.Ī cappuccino is made with equal parts coffee, milk, and foam.Ī latte is made with coffee and milk, with more milk than coffee and very little foam on the top.An espresso served as a single shot is generally between 25ml-30ml and is extracted in approximately 25-30 seconds. Since ‘latte’ just means milk, be careful while ordering a latte in an Italian café because you’ll be served a glass of steamed milk. Lattes are also very popular all over the world and many variations exist. A latte has much more steamed milk and less foam than a cappuccino (around 15% coffee, 85% milk). Traditionally, cappuccino is a morning drink but not everyone follows this outside of Italy.Ī latte is also made of coffee, milk, and foam but the ratios are different than a cappuccino. Cappuccinos are immensely popular all over the world and flavor additions like vanilla and hazelnut are common. This inverse macchiato is also called a latte macchiato and this is where some of the confusion with the coffee maker may have started. These days you can find variations on the classic macchiato like a caramel version or an inverse macchiato which is hot milk with a small splash of espresso. Macchiato literally translates as “marked” referring to how the espresso is marked with a dash of milk. The difference between these drinks has been a point of confusion for many in the coffee world, so let’s break it down simply (and yes, you’re right it has a lot to do with the amount of milk in the drink):Īn espresso macchiato is made by adding a splash of milk to a shot of espresso. It's possible, though still unlikely, that the Pixel 8 Pro gets this feature - only time will tell. The Pixel 8 recently passed through Qi certification, and its listing delivers the same Qi 1.2.4 version number alongside 12W power limits. Qi2 promises to bring MagSafe-style pucks and pads to Android phones, but it's unlikelly to be included on this year's phones. We're optimistic that the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor should be significantly faster than its predecessors but doubt it will keep pace with the one on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.įinally, on a disappointing note, the Pixel 8 series sounds set to miss out on one of the most anticipated advancements in wireless charging in years. It's still an under-display fingerprint sensor, but it should be faster than the Pixel 7's optical sensor. Likewise, we're also expecting Google Pixel 8 lineup to sport an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. This appears to be exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro and won't be seen on the cheaper model. It's not a brand-new feature for smartphones – we've seen Honor include similar in the past – but this is the first time we've seen this feature on a Pixel device. The feature is a contactless thermometer that monitors your skin's temperature to help you determine if you're unwell. The flagship Pixel 8 Pro looks almost certain to come with a built-in thermometer that was shown off in a leaked video in mid-May.
